Zhi Tong Deng Gua Yi/Cardboard Cylinder Lamp-hanger Chair
Height: 800mm
Width: 6400mm
Depth: 480mm
This design firstly collects cardboard cylinders (the diameter is about 80mm) from printing stores. Secondly, strings them by rebar and fixes two sides by bolts, then combines and stands those cardboard cylinders line by line. The seating surface is covered by a piece of 10mm transparent acrylic sheet, while the back utilizes a row of cardboard cylinders that are transversely perforated by a piece of 32mm cardboard cylinders, and we can see 2 outer parts (each about 80mm long) of the 32mm cardboard cylinders on both sides, these outer parts create a pattern like lamp-hanger chairs in Ming Dynasty. After finishing the work, we need to coat a protective layer of matt varnish. The notion of this design is to make use of these useless cardboard cylinders, and via simple process they form a useful chair. In order to avoid monotony, we refer to furniture in Ming Dynasty and combine the chair with traditional meanings, in this way, we build up the connection between useless materials in industrial era and Chinese traditional culture.
